Gray to i.l., Garabito recalled
Gerson Garabito is up to replace Jon Gray, at least for now
Prior to yesterday’s game, the Texas Rangers placed pitcher Jon Gray on the injured list. To take his place on the active roster, the Rangers have recalled pitcher Gerson Garabito.
As we discussed yesterday, Gray has a neuroma on his foot, and that condition is going to end his season. Per Evan Grant, the issue has dogged him throughout the season after cropping up last year, and may require surgery to repair. It sounds like this may be something he’d pitch through if the Rangers were in the race, but the concerns about it potentially impacting his delivery and leading to an arm injury are such that they are erring on the side of caution.
Meanwhile, Gerson Garabito is back in the majors, at least for now. The Rangers have Josh Sborz and Jacob Latz close to a return, as well as Jacob deGrom potentially back next week, so Garabito’s stay may be a short one. Of course, Matt Festa and Chase Anderson are also currently on the active roster, so it isn’t like Garabito is clearly the odd man out. For now he gives the Rangers some potential length out of the pen, though, something they need with Gray out of the rotation and “TBD” currently occupying that spot.
