Tottenham to bring back familiar face to repalce Timo Werner; Manchester United also keen
Tottenham keen to bring back Marcus Edwards but face competition from Manchester United
Timo Werner quickly returned to Tottenham Hotspur after spending the second half of last season on loan at White Hart Lane, signing a fresh loan agreement which includes a buy option from RB Leipzig. However, the Germany international has been forced to play a limited role at the club this season.
It is appearing increasingly likely that Werner’s long-term future lies away from north London. The 28-year-old is poised to return to RB Leipzig at the end of the season instead of becoming a permanent member of Ange Postecoglou’s squad at Tottenham, owing to his hugely inconsistent and unproductive displays.
Ange Postecoglou has seemingly set his sights on signing a new attacker instead of persisting with Werner, with the Lilywhites actively scouring the market for alternative options. The north Londoners are seriously evaluating the market to bring in an attack-minded winger who can play on either flank, leading to Werner exiting the club in the summer.
According to a report from TEAMtalk, Sporting CP winger Marcus Edwards has emerged as a target for Tottenham but they face competition from Premier League rivals Manchester United. This is because Ruben Amorim has been appointed as the new head coach of Manchester United and the Portuguese tactician is keen on bringing the former Spurs academy talent to Old Trafford.
Marcus Edwards failed to break into the senior Tottenham side, and when he initially left the club for Portuguese outfit Vitoria de Guimaraes in 2019, Spurs retained 50 per cent of the player’s economic rights. The fleet-footed winger joined Sporting CP in 2022, though vitally, the north Londoners retained their economic rights in the player.
The aforementioned report adds Spurs still have a 35 per cent sell-on clause on the Portuguese wide attacker, thanks to a part of the agreement that brought Pedro Porro from Sporting CP to White Hart Lane in January 2023, which means that we would have to pay a considerably lower fee for the player than Man United or any other clubs.
One would think that Man United would potentially be favourites to land Edwards’ signature due to his strong working relationship with Amorim. However, one cannot rule out that the 25-year-old is a Spurs academy product and may have the desire to return to N17 and prove himself after almost six years away.
If Big Ange and Daniel Levy are seriously interested in the player, we must test Sporting’s resolve with a cheeky bid in the January transfer window itself.
