Report: €35 million Star was expecting a new deal at Newcastle United by unexpected news ruined it…
|What Newcastle United were really planning to do with Elliot Anderson last summer before selling him
The 2024 summer transfer window did not end how Elliot Anderson or Newcastle United expected.
The Geordie midfielder was sold by Newcastle United, with Toon officials scrambling to comply with PSR.
They were desperate to avoid a points deduction, which resulted in the club cashing in on two young stars. Elliot Anderson joined Nottingham Forest for £35million, while Yankuba Minteh went to Brighton for £33million.
Anderson was sad to leave Newcastle, while Toon fans were equally gutted. This was a local lad who had emerged from the academy, standing out in a Newcastle United team that had megastars like Bruno Guimaraes and Anthony Gordon.
But he was forced to go, with his departure ensuring that Newcastle United avoided a sizeable points deduction. He had helped his boyhood club, just in a way that he never had imagined.
What Newcastle United were doing with Elliot Anderson before Nottingham Forest transfer
It is a complete contrast to what was expected to happen with Anderson and Newcastle United last summer.
That is according to the Athletic, who report that Anderson was in talks to sign a contract extension with Newcastle United before his transfer to Nottingham Forest.
The Athletic state that both the club and the player were keen to agree an extension, with Anderson confident that he was staying at St James’ Park.
But then the landscape shifted. Contract talks were not concluded, and conversations shifted towards a £35million transfer to Nottingham Forest.
PSR agony helped Newcastle United and Elliot Anderson
Eddie Howe wanted to keep Anderson, but could not. Anderson wanted to stay, but could not.
In truth, it is a transfer that has benefitted all parties.
While it is a real shame that Anderson no longer plays for Newcastle United, he would not have played as regularly for the Magpies this season as he has for Nottingham Forest. He has become a key player for Nuno Espirito Santo, with Anderson ‘getting better with every performance’.
Meanwhile, Newcastle avoided a points deduction. That looks vital now, with the Magpies still in a position to qualify for next season’s Champions League.
